Bay Storage Shelves, Drawers and Slides Tip submitted by Doug Key 10/2002 (email keyd@earthlink.net)

Optimizing utilization of the abundant basement storage area on the Rexhall RoseAir diesel presented some interesting challenges.  The bay openings are over 30” high and maintain this height for a depth of about 26” into the bay, after which the height drops to about 18”.  For all but one of the bay openings, I installed a 1” angle iron shelf frame, down 10” to 12’ from the top of the bay, and installed a ½” sheet of plywood to form the shelf (see pictures).  On one of these shelves I installed two drawers to hold tools and other small items that I use most frequently, i.e., tire gauge, air chuck, screw drivers, socket sets, etc. (see pictures).  To provide easy access to items stored in the bottom portion of the bays, I installed heavy duty sliding trays.  These trays, each 60” long, lock in their closed position and also at the halfway and fully extended positions.  The bottom of these trays is ¾’ plywood which makes an excellent base for inserting eyehooks for use with shock cords to secure items to the tray, if needed (note the barbeque is secured with these cords.  There is about 4” of clearance beneath the slide trays, which is an excellent place to store tables, brooms, awning hook, and similar items.
