| Combination Computer Station, Leg Rest, Storage Box and End Table Tip submitted by Doug Key 10/2002 (eamil keyd@earthlink.net) | |||||||||||||||||||||
| The Problem: We had several different reasonably large items in our coach: a footstool used by the passenger while underway; a large plastic box in which we kept our many campground directories, folded maps, AAA guides, etc.; and an end table. In addition, I wanted a place to mount my Delorme laptop computer stand, which I did not want to permanently mount on or near the dash. My goal was to consolidate these into one item, roughly no larger than any of the individual items. This would clean up the clutter, provide greater functionality, and negate the problem of where to store some of the items when we reached our destination. The Solution: I made a box 12” by 14” wide by 15” high with a lift off lid. On two of the sides I added decorative handles, matching those in the coach, to facilitate moving the box. On one side of the box I installed the mounting hardware for the Delorme computer stand. While underway, a cushion is placed over the top of the box to serve as the leg rest. If access to campground directories or maps is required, it is quite easy to remove the lid to retrieve the desired directory or map. Due to the weight of the box with all the directories in place, the laptop computer is very stable and survived a panic stop at freeway speeds. When we reach our destination, the laptop is removed; the stand easily slides off its mount and is stored behind the passenger chair or recliner. The box is then moved near the sofa to serve as an end table – with the laptop table hardware facing away from the living area. The box is inexpensive to make - I used ½” beech plywood with solid oar corner posts and top. The expensive item is the Delorme laptop desk. As a substitute for this manufactured desk a wooden desk could be made. I have seen a laptop table made by one of our members using a wood desktop mounted on a 1¼” clothes rod. This table was secured to the side bulkhead next to the passenger chair but the rod could be secured to the back of the box in such a manner as to be easily removed. | |||||||||||||||||||||
